ROAR Program

Eleven employees from TheBANK have recently been volunteering their morning time before work to listen to students East Elementary School in Alton read out loud. They are part of the Reach Out and Read (ROAR) program to promote childhood literacy among students. The ROAR program began on September 8 in the Alton Community School District and will continue during the school year. The volunteers, coordinated by Sandy Smith, take turns on different days of the week to listen and assist the students with their reading skills. Each of the volunteers spend 30 minutes at the school, seeing five or more students within that time frame. It’s a rewarding experience for everyone involved.

According to East Elementary, after week 5, ROAR volunteers had 394 shared reading experiences with the students . . . how incredible is that! If you would like to be part of the ROAR program, please contact the school district at 474-2600.
